"Sugar Sky", by Chris Cubeta & The Liars Club

FR-049 / The Family Records Singles Club - Vol. 4 / Chris Cubeta and The Liars Club - Sugar Sky

"Sugar Sky," a song originally written by Chris Cubeta more than ten years ago, remains a staple of The Liars Club's set and a fan favorite.

Originally recorded as a track on an album of the same name, "Sky," has undergone a number of alterations over the years. And what started out as bouncy, middle-of-the-set rock tune has morphed into a centerpiece of live shows that often features a lush, orchestral arrangement. Its lyrics represent some of Cubeta's most abstract and variegated. The song opens with the antagonistic image of "cup of milk and a razor blade," but eventually resolves with the plaintively resigned rejoinder, "I need to hold you, one more time, if nothing at all." "Sugar Sky" is Cubeta at his finest: playful, earnest, aloof and downright determined to peel back the layers of love to expose the melancholy beneath.
